However, it can be even more difficult to choose books as a parent who is not familiar with reading levels, book content, and school curriculum. A provided (reliable) list is always helpful. I feel like this list is extremely helpful for myself as well. As a special education teacher, I have a wide range of learners. Many of my readers are reading well below grade level, and I also have some nonreaders in the mix. Having books which apply to all learners is wonderful. Even though my students may not be able to read the material independently, having the provided texts read aloud to them is beneficial as well. The students will be more likely to stay engaged with a book that appeals to their liking than any boring old book.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12459153965316790218noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9200808769555430311.post-91622953977037330492016-02-06T13:30:10.978+11:002016-02-06T13:30:10.978+11:00Thank you for this book list! You mentioned that books should be those that others love and that you should want to turn the page. As I read this I can’t help but wonder what has happened to the love of reading? Children should love to read and read what they love. Research has proven that if the child is engaged in what they read and enjoy it they are more likely to increase their literacy compared to those who do not particular enjoy what they are reading. In the schools today we see more children being forced to read books based on what is required of them rather than allowing them to read what they love. This push seems to stem from the mandated state testing, teachers feeling the pressure of preparing their students for the end of year state test. This often means cutting out most of not all of the reading for enjoyment opportunities, but this couldn’t be more wrong. In fact by forcing students to read endless books and passages about material that does not interest them and they don’t enjoy is doing more harm than good. Now you have students dreading the school day and absolute detesting reading instruction and literacy time. This is all backwards! Teachers should be fostering a love of reading that will in turn increase literacy which will then help these children when they do have to read passages that are boring to them. I am certainly not placing the blame on teachers, they have a tough job and not enough time or funding to do it, but I think it’s time to get back to allowing children to rediscover a love of reading. This book list is a great place to start. I think there should be a balance. There does need to be some reading that includes material that may not be a child’s favorite because they must learn strategies for reading this material, but they also need to be given some choice as to want they are reading and some free time to read for enjoyment and not just to take a test. Thank you for your book list, I see many of my favorite books on it. I will be sure to use this for my own sons this summer and make it available for my students too. If you look at my varied previous blog posts you'll see that I have reviewed and mentioned many in the past. Offer me your top 10 picks across the categories and I'll consider them. I'll also add some of the great books of this type that I've already reviewed in the past.
